Dakota Pitts (b. 1989) is an American realist painter born and raised in Long Beach California. Having grown up visiting galleries with his parents, Dakota developed an appreciation for paintings at a young age.
Inspired by artists such as Sorolla, Sargent, and Edgar Payne, Dakota began oil painting in his early twenties. Predominantly self taught, he believes that the key to his painting is a keen sense of observation. Even when he isn’t painting, he is always on the look out for scenes and subjects that inspire him. For Dakota, “painting is about being honest” with himself and the viewer. Whether he’s working on location or in the studio, his goal is to gain a deeper understanding of himself and his subjects through painting.
Dakota now lives with his wife, Samantha, in a small town on the central coast of California. You can often spot him working, brush in hand, on a local beach or in the countryside.
